HTC will not announce its new flagship, the rumored HTC U12, at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. This information was provided to us by an inside source, which also added that the company is planning to host a separate event after MWC, though we were not given a specific date, but it will probably land in either March or April. The HTC U12 name has not been confirmed just yet, but that is the most probable name for the company’s upcoming flagship.
Some rumors suggested that the HTC U12 will be announced at MWC 2018, while other claimed that the Taiwanese company is aiming to avoid Samsung and its Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus launch event. Well, considering the newly-surfaced info, the latter seems to be accurate, as HTC probably doesn’t want to end up being in Samsung’s shadow or anything of the sort. Having said that, the HTC U12 had surfaced a number of times thus far, though those leaks are contradicting each other, so we still do not know what exactly to expect. The HTC U12 will, quite probably, resemble the HTC U11 Plus, though, as the company will probably be looking to trim down those bezels, which probably means we’ll end up with a rear-facing fingerprint scanner. The phone will probably be made out of metal and glass, and it will ship with IP68 certification for water and dust resistance.
Now, the HTC U11 arrived back in May last year with a rather thick set of bezels and a front-facing fingerprint scanner. The device did not look bad by any means, but the HTC U11 Plus does look like a more refined phone, which is probably why the company will look to base the HTC U12 more on the HTC U11 Plus, than on the HTC U11. The HTC U11 shipped with a 5.5-inch QHD display, while the HTC U12 will almost certainly sport a larger display than that, due to thinner bezels, and its display will arrive with an 18:9 aspect ratio, not your regular 16:9 aspect ratio. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 will, almost certainly, fuel the HTC U12, while the phone is expected to include 6GB of RAM on the inside. Android Oreo will come pre-installed on the phone, while HTC’s Sense UI will be included on top of it.
