In October last year, Huawei introduced the high-end Mate 10 smartphone series. By the end of this month the company will unveil the Huawei P20 or the P11 series. In the second half of 2018 the Chinese company will release its new Mate smartphone series, will this be the Mate 11 or the Mate X?

Huawei MateX smartphone

On February 9, 2018 Huawei filed a remarkable trademark application with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) for the name MateX, as first discovered by Mobiel Kopen. The legal company Forresters from London has filed the application for Huawei. The trademark is categorized as; ‘ Mobile phones; smartphones’.

It´s not the first time smartphone manufacturers call their flagship model the ´X´. Apple released the iPhone X, as their 10th anniversary edition. Last year, Samsung also filed a trademark for the words Galaxy X, this might be the upcoming foldable smartphone or the next Galaxy S-series.

Premium flagship devices with the name X

It’s a remarkable trademark for two reasons. First of all, the Roman X means ’10’. But the current model is already the Mate 10, which doesn’t seem very logical. Unless this becomes an extra edition?

Moreover, rumors suggest the current Huawei P10 series might be succeeded by the Huawei P20, instead of the P11. If Huawei truly changes the name of its P-series, by working with dozens, it seems a little strange to work with Roman numerals for its Mate series.

On the other hand, Huawei also released the premium Matebook X last year, as the first laptop / ultrabook from the company. So the company already has some ‘experience’ with the name X. I guess time will tell whether Huawei will truly launch a Mate X smartphone.
